Day 3 - Cancun

Today was our free day in Cancun.  We slept in a bit and hit the road for a market in town and found an incredible spot for breakfast:

Gorditos - potato and chorizo & chicharrones

huaraches with eggs

Ready for the next adventure, we caught a ferry to Isla Mujeres, a very pretty island off the coast.  The water was so clear and blue heading over:

We walked through downtown for a bit and caught the Nigeria/France soccer game at a small bar.  Then we walked the streets some more in search of the Fenix Beach Club:

small street on Isla Mujeres

Unfortunately, Fenix is closed on Mondays, but we jumped in the water for a leisurely swim anyway.  The beach was pretty, but we forgot to take photos.  The plan was to grab a ferry back to Cancun so we could watch the Germany/Algeria game, but when we finally arrived at a bar down the street from our hotel, they told us the game was on a channel they didn't get.  Same in our hotel.  Bummer.

Dinner was at a spot called The Distilleria (basically a Mexican Chevy's, as funny as that sounds).  I didn't get any photos of the food because the dishes weren't great to look at, though the appetizers were surprisingly delicious - a chicken soup and, get this, fried cheese covered in tomatillo sauce and crumpled potato chips!  AMAZING.  During the meal we got to watch the sun set:

Luckily we were able to get out just in time for the mariachi band to start.  This was a five man crew and they were LOUD.  I was just waiting for the restaurant to start popping out balls of tortilla dough from the back of the kitchen.  Ack!

We stumbled home and packed, ready for Chitchen Itza tomorrow and one of our fave places ever, Tulum!  We're so excited to leave the mariachis behind and find our way to jungle ruins, yummy food and great beaches.  Talk to you tomorrow - go USA!
