Day 13 - Kyoto

It's new years eve here!!!  We spent the day temple-going and shopping all around Kyoto.  First we stopped by a cafe for breakfast and I got a breakfast hamburger.  It was actually just an egg, ham and cheese sandwich, but this version had mayo, mustard and a ketchup-salsa spread and salad on the side.  It was surprisingly good!

After a train ride to Arashiyama, we visited the Tenryu-ji temple and garden (a UNESCO world heritage site) and the bamboo grove:

On our way back into downtown Kyoto, we happened upon the Nishiki Market, which spans four city blocks and houses over 100 shops and stalls that sell everything from candies to pickled vegetables to dried fish to knives.  We slowly shuffled our way through the crazy crowd and took in everything we could.  We even bought a few things :)

In need of a rest, we cabbed back to the hotel.  Dinner was at Tenyu, another tempura spot and it was excellent, though I didn't take any good photos of the food.  To kill two hours after dinner, we bar-hopped in Gion - first at a place called Dylan II that only played, you guessed it, Bob Dylan, and second at a place called Fly Me to the Moon.  And then it was temple time!  We joined the masses and shuffled our way through the streets with thousands and thousands of people:

What a lovely evening we had!  Happy new years to everyone back home!!!!!

Day 12 - Tokyo & Kyoto

We made it to Kyoto!!  We shinkansen-ed our little bums all the way here, and what a cool place it is already!  But first, we spent the morning and early afternoon exploring Tokyo just a bit more.  The weather was sunny and warm(ish), so we walked through two parks and all the way to a ramen lunch at Ichiran:

Shout out to my mom - we saw a dressage arena on our walk through one of the
neighborhoods and thought you'd appreciate this :)

After waiting in line for about a half an hour, we finally made our way into Ichiran for lunch.  We had to buy a ticket for our ramen, then choose any additional items (drinks, extra noodles, etc.), then hand them to the waitress, who then ushered us to our seats.  But not really the kind of seats you traditionally think of, more like a small boxed-off booth for a single diner, so one can focus on the taste of the ramen (I'm serious), not fellow diners.  It was really funny.

Twenty minutes later, we emerged new people.  The ramen was exceptional.  After a quick train ride home and a stop by the hotel for our bags, we were on to the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto:

Just a two-hour ride and we arrived!  We cabbed to the hotel (which has an amazing lobby) and hit the town for a shabu-shabu dinner:

Shabu-shabu!!
The food was excellent at this place but the seating left a lot to be desired.  The tables in the restaurant sat only about a foot off the floor, so we kneeled, crouched and folded ourselves to fit under the table while we ate:

Sake and beer made it all perfectly bearable, so it was fine :).  Off to bed now to dream of how we'll spend our next several days in Kyoto.  Good night!

Day 11 - Tokyo

Well, the inevitable happened.  I got sick.  Not too bad, but I was feeling under the weather a bit yesterday and then it all hit me this morning, after our visit to Tsukiji fish market.  I spent most of the day in bed, but after some miracle drugs, I was able to make it out for dinner!!  But first, some photos from the market, before we got kicked out for taking photos too early:

Umm, needle fish?
Prawns...of some variety
Cutting tuna
Prepared tuna
And uni, as far as the eye could see!
No documentation for the middle of the day, so on to dinner!  We had reservations at Takazawa, one of Tokyo's best restaurants, and one of the top 30 in the world.  And we found out why.  I planned to post all the photos I had taken during dinner, but it turns out this blog doesn't support 40-photo downloads at one time very well, so here are the highlights.  Hands down, this was the best dinner any of us ever had:

Cauliflower beads with white truffle
Vegetable ratatouille
Vegetable parfait
Shaved white truffle... in our wine!!

Duck course
Strawberry shortcake
Tea of herbs and flowers
Wreath of vegetables and beef
The entire meal was incredible and we all feel we may be ruined for life!  So happy and satisfied, we found our way through Kabukicho to the famous Park Hyatt for a nightcap:

What an incredible evening.  I highly recommend that when you come to Tokyo, you spend your last night here as we just did.  You won't regret it.  Off to Kyoto tomorrow on the Shinkansen (bullet train).  We'll report back soon!
